Monday Night Heroics in Soldier Field

    After an incredibly lackluster first half from the Minnesota Vikings, the Chicago Bears led 16-0, as Brett Favre and the Vikes couldn't put anything together against the Bears tough Defense.  Jay Cutler and the Bears moved the ball down the field almost at ease but couldn't put the Vikings away, as they settled for 3 field goals throughout the game from Robbie Gould.  However, boy did things change in the second half, as Adrian Peterson, Brett Favre, and co. exploded for 30 points and over 300 yards of total offense to send the game into overtime.  There's been plenty of memorable Monday Night games in the past year, for example the Bills-Cowboys Monday Night game from last year, however, this game was just as exciting and I think the best game of the year thus far.
       I must hand it to Brett Favre this year, as he's put together game after game of highlights and phenomenal performances.  The beginning of this game certainly led everyone to believe this was not going to be Favre's night, however, his huge second half allowed him to end up with 321 passing yards and 2 touchdowns; none more important than the touchdown pass to Sidney Rice with only seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into OT.  Adrian Peterson also proved that he's the best running back in the league, and certainly the most feared, as he ran over the Bears defense in the second half to rush for 94 yards and put together 2 touchdowns.  No doubt he's ready for the playoffs.
     

I must ask, is this Favre actually 40 years old or what??  What the heck is going on with him?  I started him in fantasy football 2 years ago and was convinced then that his best days were behind him; now we're hearing talk of possible MVP consideration.  Hats off to Farve even though the Bears pulled this one out tonight.  He's the definition of a good ol' boy that never gives up and never cashes out.
       Jay Cutler also showed tonight why some still regard him as a top level quarterback in the NFL, even though probably a second tier quarterback because of his lack of wide receiver talent.  Nonetheless, he persevered tonight and put together a monster night in front of a packed house at Soldier Field in Chicago.  Cutler led the game winning drive in overtime and threw 4 touchdowns to only 1 interception....wow.  He also came through each time when Chicago needed him, as the fans and his team were behind him the whole way....unlike the rest of the season.  The Bears deserved to win this game tonight and maximized on their opportunities to score, as they pulled it out 36-30.  It's always great to see a team like the Bears return to greatness, if only for one game, and pull out a gritty win against a conference opponent. Favre and the rest of the Vikings learned tonight that they'll need to play solid football for 60 minutes instead of just 30 if they wish to make a run in the playoffs this year.
   

NCAA Mens Basketball Rankings as of Monday 12/28/2009

      For those Big East fans out there, you have to be pumped to see 4 Big East teams in the top 10 of the Associated Press rankings, and 5 Big East teams in the Top 13.  However, the concerning factor being that no other Big East teams are ranked at this time.  Earlier in the season, there were 8 Big East teams ranked in the Top 25.  We'll see how these numbers change as conference play gets under way, however, with the strength and talent across the board in the Big East, it's clear that a .500 or better record in conference play will mean that team is battle tested.  Syracuse University(12-0) opens up their Big East season against Seton Hall University(9-2) tomorrow at 9pm.  The Hall just came off a very tough fought overtime loss to now 6th ranked West Virginia.  SU vs. Seton Hall should be a battle...can't wait.

Colts Undefeated Season Comes to an End....good decision!

      Nobody thought it would take 16 weeks, and I'm sure nobody thought the Indianapolis Colts first loss would occur against the New York Jets in week 16 by a score of 29 to 15, however, it was clear on Sunday that the Jets came to play and the deciding factor was clearly the fact that Peyton Manning was pulled from the game.  I definitely agree with the decision made by Colts coach Jim Caldwell, as he ultimately felt that the perfect season was not worth risking a possible injury to his All-Pro, all-knowing, all everything Quarterback Peyton Manning.  Any football fan knows that a perfect season sounds great, however, Peyton Manning and Jim Caldwell want another SUPERBOWL. 

       Unlike Bill Belichek's 2007 Patriots team that sought to classlessly destroy and embarrass every team that came in their path, the Colts focus isn't on the record books, but instead is on reaching their team goals of a championship for the history books.  You've got to commend the Colts for a strong regular season showing and for being what the 2007 New England Patriots were not, which is a class act organization that can be seen through their coach and players.  You certainly won't hear of any scandals or possible league violations by the Colts.  They've had some extremely tight and very tough wins this year and deserved to be undefeated until this week, however, I find it refreshing that the Colts and NFL fans can focus on something other than constantly hearing about the perfect season.  Week 17 to come, and the much anticipated playoffs shortly down the road.
     On a different note, well done to Peyton Manning for hitting 50,000 passing yards for his career and only one of four quarterbacks to do so, that's one heck of a feet and a tremendous accomplishment.

The Giants Blow Out the Injury Ridden Redskins 45-12

    In a must win game for the New York Giants, they proved they still had what it takes to show up and embarrass the Washington Redskins in what many were expecting to be a very tight Monday Night Football battle of two storied NFC East teams.  The Redskins had no answer in their secondary, as Eli Manning torched the Skins for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns to 3 different receivers.  Furthermore, the stingy Washington defense of last year ranked 4th in the league, however, the Skins D allowed over 110 total rushing yards on the ground between two headed beast of Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs that simply pounded the ball down field and exposed the gaping holes in the Redskins defense.  Bradshaw showed his bursts of speed and power as he recorded 2 touchdowns and rushed for 61 yards on only 9 carries.....nearly 7 yards a rush.

 The Giants controlled the game in every statistical category.  This included first downs, total yards, time of possession, penalty yards, and most importantly turnovers.  The Redskins had 3 turnovers to the Giants 0, as the Giants pressure forced the Redskins into mistakes and penalties.  None were more costly than the interception of Washington quarterback Jason Campbell's pass which was returned for a touchdown by Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas with 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter as he practically walked into the end zone untouched from 14 yards out.  The entire night was very disheartening for the Redskins hopeful, as nearly half the crowd was gone by halftime.  This was all so disappointing after the Redskins had been so competitive and been playing very tough ball against their last 5 opponents.  Even with all of the injuries to leaders such as Clinton Portis, Chris Samuels, and Chris Cooley, the Redskins were expecting a strong performance from their back ups.  Nonetheless, it wasn't meant to be this night, as the Giants completely dominated the Skins to keep their playoff hopes alive. 

SU's Surprising Battle with the Bonnies

       The Syracuse Orange (11-0) overcame a pesky St. Bonaventure (6-4) team Saturday night in front of 20,578 fans at the Carrier Dome, as this game was frought with injuries and ejections in what many believe to be the most exciting SU/Bonaventure game in years.  The Cuse once again won a much tighter game than what the end score showed, as the Orange won 85-72 due to some clutch 3 point shooting from their leaders in the back court, Brandon Triche and Andy Rautins.  The Bonnies front court fought it out with the SU big men in order to keep the game very competitive, however, the big difference in this one was the guard play.  Furthermore, SU's field goal percentage was stellar, as the Cuse made 56% of their shots, as opposed to the solid 46% out of Bonaventure.  This game was very tight throughout all of the first half, as St. Bonaventure even held a 35-32 lead with a few minutes remaining in the first half.
       The Bonnies proved they had what it takes to stay with the 5th ranked Orange, but as was the case for the UNC game, the Cuse used spurts and runs in order to push out their lead with the 3's they've grown to rely on.  The main run that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game was the 21-4 run that stretched into the 15 minute mark of the second half, as Brandon Triche rattled off a 3 to get the Cuse fans out of their seats and the Dome rumbling.   Nonetheless, St. Bonaventure closed to within nine points with just under 10 minutes remaining, Syracuse senior Andy Rautins drained back-to-back 3-pointers for a 69-54 lead.  However, that's when things were about to get very interesting for Rautins at right around the 8 minute mark in the game.  At that point, SU led 71-59. The Bonnies were on offense and as center Andrew Nicholson trotted through the lane, he delivered what Rautins described as a low blow to his groin area.  Rautins immediately dropped to the floor and crouched in the fetal position, he then pointed toward Nicholson and yelled to the officials for confirmation of the ridiculous move by Nicholson. Officials stopped play to get together at the scorer’s table and watched what happened on the televised replay.  Moments later, Nicholson was ejected without any doubt in mind.

Andy Rautins had this to say about the incident, “I wasn’t going to let something like that slide. I was in pain. I felt nauseous for the rest of the game. Especially something unprovoked like that. There’s just no excuse for that.”

   Nicholson knew what he did was wrong and worthy of an ejection, as he galloped down the tunnel that led to the St. Bonaventure locker room.  It was clear the Bonnies were a bit frustrated with they way they had allowed SU to push out their lead, and it's possible that Nicholson's move was a measure of showing his physicality and presence to the SU team.  Nonetheless, Nicholson's move appeared to re-ignite the Orange as they closed out the game with their stingy defense that has been their staple all season long.  More importantly, SU led 71-57 at the point of the flagrant foul, as Nicholson had played 32 minutes and had contributed 18 points on a spectacular 9-of-10 shooting.  The Bonnies needed their leader down low, and with no Nicholson their efforts at getting back into shooting range of the Orange were over. 
        It was another very entertaining game in the Carrier Dome, and one that I'm sure SU has learned much about their team from, as they played well to overcome the runs of the Bonnies and Boeheim utilized different rotations with Arinze Onuaku out for most of the game due to a "minor" bruise to his knee.  From the sounds of it, Onuaku will be ready to play for the next game, however, it may be better off for the Cuse to rest him and make sure he's 100% for when the Big East starts in January.  Go CUSE!!!

Chris Henry's Dark Road **Updated

      Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry experienced what is being called "very serious" injuries today in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Police have indicated that Henry jumped into the bed of a pick up truck that was being driven by his fiancee Loleini Tonga after a dispute.  Henry was found a half mile from Tonga's parents house on the ground with what KY Post have indicated are "life threatening head injuries."  At this point the hospital and police have not disclosed any further information, but some reports have indicated that it doesn't look good for Henry to survive this accident.  Moreover, Henry was just last month placed on injured reserve by Cincinnati after breaking his left forearm against the Baltimore Ravens in week 8.  He later had season ending surgery after going through half an NFL season in which his production on the field was well below his expectations.  Nonetheless, the Bengals have flourished this season, as they're off to their best start in years and lead the AFC North by 2 games with 3 to play.

       Overall, Henry has been somewhat of a feel good story lately since he was brought back to the team after initially being let go from the Bengals because of his 5th arrest back in 2007....whoa!  Chris has stayed out of trouble for over a year now, and has indicated that his fiancee Loleini is the reason behind that turnaround.  Ironically, it appears that in this case Tonga may have ultimately caused the demise of his football career and quite possibly his life.  There's no doubt that Henry never reached his full potential after being considered a top prospect out of the highly touted West Virginia program, and it's doubtful after this car accident that Henry will ever play again.  We must all keep him in our prayers as he struggles to overcome these unfortunate events; I can only hope that the reports we've all recieved thus far are overstating his injuries.

**An update to the post from last night.  Chris Henry, age 26, unfortunately, passed away this morning due to the injuries he sustained in the above mentioned incident from yesterday afternoon.  Even though I'm sure most of us were sick of hearing of all the issues and run-ins with the law that Chris Henry went through over the last 5 years.  I'm also sure that any person out there, whether they follow football or not, would have loved to read or hear about a story down the road in which a young man turned his life around and became one of the best wide receivers in the game, maybe even a role model at some point.  However, Henry didn't live long enough in order for any of us to see his transformation.  Most people believe that no sports relationships are closer than the one between a quarterback and his wide receiver.  Therefore, I take the words of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer to say a lot about how Chris Henry was actually making an effort to become the best man and wide receiver he could.  According to Palmer, Henry had a great offseason and had "really turned his life around."  Palmer and fellow coaches had seen a glimpse this year of what could be expected for years to come in Cincinnati, nonetheless, it is ironic that today Chris Henry's life was so tragically taken away.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Henry family on this day.

The Cards Get Stunned in Candlestick 24-9

        Candlestick park hosted another great Monday Night Game tonight, as the 49ers won the turnover battle and what turned out to be a much closer game than what it should have been.  It was certainly evident early on that Kurt Warner and the rest of the Cardinals, primarily the running backs, weren't planning on holding on to the ball for long, as the Cards were riddled with 7 turnovers throughout the game....are you kidding me?  Kurt Warner threw 2 interceptions, had a fumble and almost had another one, as he struggled to find any rhythm during the game because of a 49er pass rush that completed dominated the Cardinals offensive line.  3 different Arizona running backs each coughed up the ball in critical plays to thwart the Cardinals potential drives.  However, more importantly, the 49ers were only able to stumble to a 17-9 lead in the 3rd quarter, which should have been much more because of the endless opportunities the Cards handed them. 

          Alex Smith was suprisingly the better quarterback this night, as he threw for 2 touchdowns, but also tossed in 2 interceptions.  It's clear that Alex Smith has the skills to be a solid starting quarterback in the NFL, however, there's definitely times where he convinces you otherwise.  Nonetheless, with the help of Frank Gore rushing the ball 25 times for a huge 167 yards, San Francisco didn't need much to overcome the clumsy Arizona offense's output.  In addition, Michael Crabtree continued to impress, as he played a very agressive game and fearlessly sought out more yardage on a play in which he slipped to the ground, and got up to pick up another 6 yards for the first down.        
        The lone bright spot for Arizona was the rushing game of Beanie Wells, as he took the bulk of the wordload and pulled down 15 carries for 79 yards and a tough rushing touchdown.  For any sleeper picks to use in your fantasy football playoffs, feel free to deploy Wells in case you need him.  He has the potential to run in up the gut, or to bust it out wide for a long run.  The only thing he needs to do in order to cement more playing time is if he could block as well as Hightower.  At this point it's no comparison, as Hightower still runs well in his second year in the league and his blocking is far superior to Wells.  Either way, Wells has put together a respectable campaign in his rookie year and has certainly turned some heads.

         Overall, this was a sloppy game that San Francisco took advantage of, as they stripped the ball from Arizona runners throughout, leaving the Arizona offense to spend the game on the sidelines as specatators.  The Niners defense definitely flexed their muscles, as they held a robust Cardinal offense to only 170 pass yards.  Monday Night Football was entertaining and you've got to tip your hat to the Niners, however, I left the game expecting much more out of the Cards offense and was a bit disappointed in the effort after the Cardinals totally dismantled the Vikings a week prior.  You've gotta love the swings week to week in the NFL. 

Philadelphia takes down the Giants.... Again!

    The Philadelphia Eagles once again had a very impressive showing as they outlasted the NY Giants in the Meadowlands in a very high scoring and entertaining Sunday Night game.  Philly won the special teams battle in this one; Desean Jackson showed why he's one of the most explosive players in the NFL as he exploded for a 72 yard punt return for a touchdown with 4:09 left in the 2nd quarter and then recorded another homerun with a 60 yard touchdown reception from Donovan McNabb with 4:57 left in the 3rd quarter.  He is by far the MVP of the season thus far for the Eagles, as he once again recorded a huge game.  Jackson's game totals were 6 receptions for 168 yards.....huge!  The Eagles also won the turnover battle 4-1 as Giants Running Back Brandon Jacobs continued his rushing struggles this year by fumbling the ball with 9:40 left in the 1st quarter.  Eagles Cornerback Sheldon Brown was in the right place at the right time, as he scooped up the ball and returned it 60 yards for the touchdown.  

      For all those Eagles fans out there, you've gotta love it when Philly comes into the Giants home stadium and racks up 30 in the first half against the G-Men and comes out victorious.  The Eagles were in control from the beginning, however, it was clear in this one that both defenses were not holding their own, as big plays and long drives made this an exciting game for the fans.  The Giants even took the lead with 5:12 in the 3rd quarter as Eli Manning passed to Domenik Hixon for a 61 yard touchdown, but it wasn't meant to last as the Eagles scored immediately after that to take the lead back.
      Even Michael Vick got involved and for the second straight game scored a rushing touchdown.  Vick is looking better and better each week, even with his small amount of action on the field, and he's slowly looking like his old football self again.  It seems like the sports world and media are also slowly moving towards viewing Vick in a different mindset.  He'll still always be remembered for his dog-fighting mistakes, however, there's no doubt he's gained some of the public's respect back since his public apology.  Time certainly has healed some of the wounds for Vick, and also for the public as well.  My guess is that Vick still has a lot to offer, and hopefully the Eagles will see some of the magic like the one on the video below.  Great win this week Eagles, you deserve first place in the extremely competitive NFC East.  See you all next week for the Eagles - Niners game. 

THE CUSE Remains Perfect with 75-51 Victory Against St. Francis

   SU fans must be happy they saw no let down by THE CUSE today against St. Francis.  After a much tighter game Thursday against the Florida Gators, this afternoon SU proved they truly have a balanced scoring attack and were able to dominate down low.  Today, Senior Center Arinze Onuaku showed his presence in the paint with clutch shots and a fabulous left hand as he put up 14 points on 70% shooting from the floor....that a baby Arinze!  Syracuse is now 10-0 on the season for the first time since the 1999-2000 season in which they started 19-0.  You truely never know which guy is going to lead the team in scoring, as 8 players can each put up double digits if called upon to do so.  Against St. Francis, Junior forward Rick Jackson had 11 points and hauled down six rebounds.  Junior forward Wes Johnson put up 12 points with nine boards while also logging three steals, 2 assists and a game-best four blocked shots....wow, this guy gets up in the air.  Redshirt freshman Mookie Jones was the last double digit scorer with 10, as he made 3 trifectas in the game today.  I was a bit surprised to see Mookie put up the numbers he did, but he looked great doing it. 
         At this point in the season I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised with the high level of point guard play out of Scoooooop Jardine.  He's consistenly played and handled the ball well and it's definitely evident that the team and coaches are expecting great things from Jardine on the court each game.  I never thought of Jardine as much of a scorer, but he's even been able to do that this year, as he's averaging 8.9 points.  He's an impact player that's been a big jolt for The Cuse so far this year.  Jardine's known as a solid passer and today was no different as he dished out a game high 9 assists.  Coach Boeheim had this to say after the game about the team chemistry and particularly the team passing: 

      "We played well together. We had 24 assists again tonight -- everyone has been very unselfish, looking for each other. We work hard and we are getting better, we just have to keep improving. We played just the first part of the season and we have a long way to go. The bottom line is we have to get better."

It was a positive effort all around today as St. Francis didn't pose much of a threat against SU's size and superior skills.  The one thing I do want to see going forward, however, is for SU to get the number of turnovers down, as they had 16 on the game today.  I'm sure everyone else is greatly looking forward to SU's upcoming BIG EAST schedule, but for the time being we're all happy with SU's out of conference W's that keep wracking up.  Go Cuse, keep the train rollin'....

The Only Orange Florida Can't Squeeze

It's not uncommon that the Syracuse University Men's Basketball team starts a season 9-0, they've certainly attained that mark multiple times before. However, it's not every year that you see THE CUSE start out their season with high quality out of conference top 25 victories. Although SU's win versus Florida was by no means convincing, unlike the one over then 13th ranked California and the following night over 4th ranked UNC, the win over Florida did show us how SU can respond to adversity. SU was in control for most of the game, however, they were down 2 with less than 10 minutes left in the game. This was caused by The Cuse giving up three straight 3 pointers to the Gators and at that point in the game every SU fan must have been shaking in their boots. Nonetheless, Rautins immediately showed his leadership abilities and demanded the ball as he hit a 3 with absolutely no hesitation.... love it. After that, SU didn't give up the lead again as Wesley Johnson decided he was going to show up and prove he's the best player SU has to offer.
The one thing this team has this year is perseverence and a sense of team. They overcame a tough Florida team and really do play well together. There isn't one guy that has to take the shot when SU needs a bucket; they can go to nearly anyone on the floor and can expect something positive. Guys like Rick Jackson exemplifies this fact. Rick plays tough D, goes for nearly every board, and has through hard off-season work become a very solid offensive player...nearly shocking after his output as a Freshman. That's why Boeheim is a hall of famer, because he's able to bring the best out of players. Great game last night gentlemen, I had knots in my stomach throughout, but still an impressive showing.

Woods Squeaky Clean Image Gone Forever

I would compare the recent "transgressions" that have come to light for Tiger Woods with those that you'd never expect out of your local Nun. I would say priest, but even then you'd possibly expect worse out of your priest in comparison to Woods. Tiger Woods image a month ago was squeaky clean; he had two young children, a beautiful Swedish wife, every endorsement known to man, he was well liked by his fellow PGA tour golfers, and oh yeah 14 Majors.
With how far Tiger has brought the game of golf since he burst onto the scene, much is owed to him for how the growth of golf has taken off. However, today Woods clean image is gone forever as more woman are coming forward and saying they slept with Tiger, and quite possibly most if not all of them were paid to keep their mouth shut. At this point no one knows the true number of floozies, but I've heard 13 thus far.....and counting. Who knows, maybe it's one for every major he's one, but I doubt it ends there.
Is this Tiger Woods or Charlie Sheen that we're talking about? Time will tell how these "transgressions" taint Woods reputation as a golfer, but there is no question as to how Woods reputation has been tainted across the world as a man, husband, and father. Even Woods fellow PGA golfers have admitted they kept there mouth shut until now, as it's been said that this scandal was the best kept secret on tour. Wow!! Nonetheless, some of these fellow golfers are now jumping off the Tiger bandwagon. Ben Crane said recently, "This is no surprise to anyone who knows Tiger, he's a phony and a fake and he can't retain that squeaky-clean endorsement deal any longer."
There is no question people now have taken Tiger off of the pedestal, and it's now known that he is not perfect and he even makes mistakes. It remains to be seen how this will affect him as a golfer, and will these mistakes feed over to his golf game. His mental capacity to overcome adversity on the golf course is what separates him from other solid golfers, and that's what makes him the best. But how will these off the course challenges change his mental ability to overcome? Will he continue to win tournaments, will he continue to play in as many tournaments, and will he continue to win Majors?? I can't wait to see what happens next....

SU resurgence... LeMoyne who??

It seems like years ago that the Syracuse Men's Basketball team lost to Division II LeMoyne in the Carrier Dome. I think any true and long term SU fan was thinking the same thing I did when the clocked struck zero, wow, is this what "our" team has become after losing Jonny, Devo, and Harris. Even though it was a preseason game and SU played man-to-man throughout, you know Boeheim was supremely embarrassed, and he should have. However, with all the off-season hype of recent additions like Brandon Triche and Wesley Johnson, the LeMoyne game was a very rough start to what appeared to be a long season ahead.

Boy how things have changed over the last month. Recently I can't turn on ESPN without hearing Dicky V or Steve Lavin annointing Wesley Johnson the next coming of Christ, a lil early but you gotta enjoy the SU love that has been long overdue. I must say that I do love all the hype that has followed since I watched arguably two of the best games I've ever seen SU play as they routed the extremely overrated California Golden Bears and a very young, but by all indications a legit North Carolina team. As we all know, it's very early, but so far I must say it's been the most exciting team I've seen out of SU since 2003. The defense is phenomenal and has been the staple of the whole SU turnaround since the LeMoyne game. We're all very excited for the upcoming Florida game on Thursday, as SU can once again confirm they are the real deal, and prove they are not some early season flare up that will sizzle out come Big East ball.
Wesley Johnson, Brandon Triche, Andy Rautins and company need to keep the train moving, and I'm sure the SU fans will be there every step of the way, as we always have pumping our fists throughout and looking forward to another successful SU bball team. See everybody after the Florida game.

Nice work KG i think the biggest difference this year is D, quick enough and big enough for the zone....also Wesley is Christ so dont be confused.....I cant be more excited for a season after the low that i felt against lemoyne i now feel amazing about the season and in a fully confident way cause we got the coach we got the system and now weve got the players.....GO CUSE
